Cognac Appellations Map

A region divided into 6 appellations

Henri COQUAND (1811-1881), professor of geology, studied the geology of the region in the mid-nineteenth century and validated with a taster a classification of soils according to the quality of the eaux-de-vie they could produce. Their work will lead around 1860 to the delimitation of different vintages. It will serve as the basis for the decree of 1938 delimiting the current appellations.

The Appellations area covers the entire Charente Maritime, a large part of the Charente, and an enclave in the Dordogne and Deux-Sèvres. The rivers helped to delimit the wines. The Grande Champagne has a natural delimitation by the Charente River and its tributary the Né.
